When I was in an interview for a publicity position, I was shocked when my Singaporean interviewer revealed that she finds nature disgusting, and not worthy of her attention.
That reminded me of a quote from the Great Sir David Attenbourgh,
“If children grow up not knowing about nature and appreciating it, they will not understand it, and if they don’t understand it, they won’t protect it, and if they don’t protect it, who will?”
In Singapore, our education system has been trying to instil the appreciation of nature into us. However, it is the way which we only get these reactions:
“Oh my gosh, it is so hot.”
“Ok, it is just green everywhere.”
“Oh, there is nothing.”
As someone that has always felt that nature’s beauty particularly in Singapore is severely underestimated, my work is an attempt to bring you to my perspective see nature as both a friend and interaction between our subjects and this nosy nostalgic photographer peeking into their lives.
